EMDR was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987 www.emdr.com. EMDR is an integrative psychotherapeutic method utilizing bilateral stimulation in order to stimulate the information processing system of the brain. This treatment is hypothesized to facilitate the accessing and processing of traumatic memories and to bring these to an adaptive resolution.
EMDR has been shown to be helpful in treating the following conditions: post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, complicated grief, and stress reduction. EMDR is also effective in treating traumatized children: www.childtrauma.com
In order to provide EMDR therapy, a therapist must complete Level I and Level II training by the EMDR institute. Qualified therapists are listed on the EMDR web site: www.emdr.com
Help is only a phone call away. While starting counseling is a major step, it is a sign of strength, not weakness. Today, more individuals, couples and families are entering counseling, not only to treat illnesses but improve their quality of life.
