The initial diagnostic evaluation is done with both partners present. As in individual counseling, a history is taken and preliminary goal setting is accomplished. Recommendations in terms of frequency of appointments, other possible therapies and a provisional diagnosis will be given. Sometimes, a combination of individual and couples counseling may be recommended depending on the presenting problems or the judgment of the counselor. Not only does the couple need a competent counselor, but the couple needs to feel comfortable with the counselor and preliminary recommendations. Some insurance companies do not reimburse for couples counseling.
Help is only a phone call away. While starting counseling is a major step, it is a sign of strength, not weakness. Today, more individuals, couples and families are entering counseling, not only to treat illnesses but improve their quality of life.
