Counseling Children and Adolescents

The initial session is conducted only with the parent(s) or adult partner(s). A history will be taken and preliminary goal setting will be accomplished. An appointment for the child or adolescent will then be set. Children 12 years and over have the right to confidentiality. No information can be given to parents or adult significant others without the child's or adolescent's written permission. Treatment practices, philosophy, provisional plan as well as limitations and risks will be discussed. Recommendations in terms of frequency of appointments, other possible therapies and a provisional diagnosis will be given. Based on mutual consent, counseling will begin. Not only does the client and parents or significant others need a competent counselor, they need to feel comfortable with the counselor and preliminary recommendations.
